About Me and My Professional Journey...
I hail from the Hisar district of Haryana State of India. Hisar is known for its chequered history, dating back to Indus Valley civilisation. Presently it is an industrial and military town with sprawling spaces and beautiful layouts.
Having done my schooling from Hisar, I did my under-graduate education in technology ( B.Tech) in textiles from Technological Institute of Textiles, Bhiwani. The institute is over 60 years old and famous for its Textile Technology course. Its alumni are spread across textile industry and abroad.
My first job was with Arvind Mills Limited ( Now Arvind Limited), as a Management Trainee. Their management training program was considered to be one of the best in the industry and as a part of my learning, I completed diplomas in Personnel Management and Sales. After the probation was over, I started working as executive weaving in one of their most modern plants, Arvind International located at Khatrej, a place in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. I had the hands-on experience of working with the state-of-the-art shuttleless looms producing denim. I subsequently got transferred in their Naroada Road unit to participate in the upcoming rope dyeing project. I had the privilege of overseeing the civil work, installation, commissioning and production of 200 shuttleless looms.
My father passed away in 1998 and I had to come back to Hisar and take a job with Government Institute of Engineering and Technology ( Now Government Polytechnic) as a lecturer. Working first with the Textile Design and then Textile Technology department, I gained valuable insights in the methods of teaching and training apart from preparation of curriculum and its implementation. I also completed my Master of Computer Applications ( MCA) with GJU Hisar during my tenure.
It was quite some time with the teaching and education and I wanted to come back to the industry, to do that, I started taking tests for the various management and fashion institutes. I got selected in National Institute of Fashion Technology ( NIFT) in 2006 in their post graduation programme in management ( MFM) and joined New Delhi centre.
2008 was the year of great turmoil and the retail industry was at its abysmal low. I joined Fabindia as my first job after my post graduation. Working first as a buyer in the fabrics and then in accessories ( Sarees, Dupattas, stoles and footwear), I learnt a new dimension of textiles which is related to Indian traditional craft. Looking from the textile engineer's eye, I got passionate about the various techniques and products that come out from the various textile clusters of India from the buying perspective. Further boost to this was given, when I joined Dilli Karigari ( Now Fabindia), the sourcing arm for Fabindia, where I worked directly with textile clusters, very small converters and sourced from yarn to the final products. There I learnt the nuances of garment production. I was also instrumental in conceiving and implementing a software solution to cater to the specific needs of the supply company.
I joined Pantaloons- Aditya Birla in 2013, as manager-sourcing for their private labels for ethnic wear. At that time the company was just getting taken over from Future Group and there were a lot of issues in handing over. It gave me a valuable learning in working in a big organised setup, following the full cycle from conceiving the designs to the final delivery to the warehouse. Living in Mumbai was a challenge in itself.
In 2014, I went back to Delhi to join Utsavfashion.com, an eCommerce company with a large clientele in the NRI section of the world. I learnt my rudiments and metrics of eCommerce there. I joined there as pricing and merchandise specialist. It was fascinating to study the physical products returned by the customer at the warehouse and in trying to figure out the reasons from the Voice of Customers as well as by looking at the products and their measurement. In my later part of career there, I also had an opportunity to work with the marketing team designing various banner and marketing campaign as well as improving the site interface.
In 2015, after a brief stint with my own eCommerce venture, I joined Reliance Retail and have been working with ajio.com, as the Assistant General Manager. The portfolio I am looking at is dealing with the textile products taken directly or inspired from the traditional textile crafts, taking from my experience with Fabindia, Pantaloons as well as from Utsav Fashion.
Apart from my professional experience, I can describe myself as a reader and a learner. I have just completed the Goodreads Challenge of completing 100 books in 2017. Also, ever since I discovered how useful these Massive Online Open Courses are, I have completed close to 55 courses. The subjects I am presently fascinated with are Business Analytics, Digital Product Management and Marketing. I like playing Guitar, whenever I have time.
I like to share knowledge. I have shared my experience in my blog mytextilenotes specially working with the textile clusters. Apart from that I have written five books- currently published by amazon- covering various topics in Textiles.
